Annotation

Sony BMG Masterworks (formed on May 2, 2005 during the Sony-BMG merger from 2004-2008) acted as an umbrella group for imprints RCA Red Seal, Sony Classical, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, and Arte Nova Classics, which continued to be produced and marketed with their individual identities. The Masterworks brand also harkens back to the days of Columbia Masterworks (1927-1980) and its successor CBS Masterworks (1980-1990), which by then was part of Sony.

In 2006, Sony BMG Masterworks launched three new labels: Masterworks Broadway, Masterworks Jazz, and Masterworks Opera (the latter defunct since 2011). In 2009, the label group was renamed Sony Masterworks.
